Course Content

The Health & Safety AT Work act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the foundation of UK health and safety law. This lesson explores what the Act requires of both employers and employees, why it was introduced, and what the consequences of failing to meet those requirements can be. For anyone working in the plumbing and heating trade, understanding this legislation is not optional — it underpins everything else.

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

Policing the Act
Knowing the law exists is one thing — understanding how it is enforced is another. This lesson looks at the role of the Health and Safety Executive, the powers available to HSE Inspectors, and the range of enforcement actions that can follow a breach, from Improvement and Prohibition Notices through to prosecution.

Health Safety and Welfare
Beyond the main Act sits a framework of regulations covering the working environment, equipment, and the welfare facilities workers are entitled to. This lesson gives an overview of the key regulations plumbers and heating engineers encounter on the job — from PPE and manual handling to working at height and CDM.

RIDDOR
When something goes wrong on site, there are legal obligations around reporting. This lesson covers the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations — what must be reported, to whom, and within what timeframe.

COSHH
Plumbers and heating engineers regularly work with substances that can cause real harm if not properly handled. This lesson covers the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations — how to identify hazardous substances, what the assessment process involves, and how to control exposure effectively.

Risk Assessments
Risk assessment is a practical tool, not a paperwork exercise. This lesson works through the HSE five-step process, covers how to calculate and prioritise risk, and looks at when assessments need updating — including how to respond when new hazards appear unexpectedly on the job.
